Fundogami - God of Gravity

Description

For :iconokami-club: contest where you design your own Okami Brush God.

This here is Fundogami, the God of Gravity (Fundo means Weight/Counterweight I think). He gives you the Gravity Brush technique, the stroke of which you can see on the pearl in his mouth. It's simply a vertical line. Drawing an upstroke decreases gravity and drawing a downstroke increases gravity. Changes in Gravity lasts 5 seconds.

Possible uses:
In battle, stronger gravity: Grounds airborne enemies, immobilizes heavy enemies
In battle, weaker gravity: Certain enemies will float away
Out of battle, stronger gravity: Sinks otherwise buoyant objects, objects being held by something can fall (Like fruit)
Out of battle, weaker gravity: You jump higher, certain objects will float upwards, will allow Kurow to fly you (Okamiden example)

As you can see, it's a very versatile brush stroke, and it's not that hard to use either~ Just make sure you draw a vertical line.

I had a lot of fun trying to decide what to draw. I was thinking through animals that had more personal meanings for me. The first thing that came to mind was a rooster (I was born in the year of the Rooster) but honestly I couldn't really think of how to draw it very well. I also thought about an owl which seemed to more recently be a bit of a theme with me but same problem with the Rooster. I suck at drawing birds.

Then came to mind Chinese Guardian Lions [link] and that got the rest of this started. The original idea was to have him be the cousin to Gekigami or something and be the God of Thunder, which is why I gave him such an epic roaring pose. The brush was going to be a circle with a dot in the middle, and a shockwave will pulse outwards from the dot and the intensity will depend on the size of the circle. But it sounded kind of useless for anything but battle and puzzles specifically designed with it in mind.

Then came the idea of Gravity. Now there was something that could get more general use out of. I loved the idea of being able to temporarily change the Gravity and that's what ended up sticking. I had a lot of trouble trying to think of what object to give him (The original Thunder God idea was going to get a drum) and I settled with a set of scales. After trying unsuccessfully to balance it on his back, I ended up just draping it over him to show that he can bend the concept of weight.

So, back to the topic of Chinese Guardian Lions, can anyone point out all the things on this God that was inspired by them? most are obvious, but there's one that a little harder to notice...

~many many hours, mostly because I kept on redrawing parts of the design

I know we didn't have to draw it in the actual Okami style, but I think it looks a lot better this way
